(500) Days of Summer - self-titled
- The soundtrack to “(500) Days of Summer” is just as delightful as the film. Music is an essential part of the movie. Not only is it a necessary presence in the background of scenes, but it also plays a primary role in the relationship of the two main characters, Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Summer (Zooey Deschanel).
The two discuss their musical preferences, such as her declaration that Ringo is her favorite Beatle just because Ringo is no one’s favorite, and it is their mutual love of the Smiths that causes Tom to fall even more deeply for Summer.
Because music played such a significant role in the film, each song brings you back to the cinematic moment in which it was featured. And as the film did itself, the soundtrack chronicles the many moods of a relationship.
“She’s Got You High” by Mumm-Ra and “Here Comes Your Man” by Meaghan Smith capture the initial infatuation; “You Make My Dreams” by Hall & Oates and “Us” by Regina Spektor embody the elation; and “Hero,” also by Regina Spektor, and “Please, Please, Please, Let Me…” are indicative of Tom’s frustration and heartbreak.
There wasn’t a bad song used in the film and with the soundtrack you get the added bonus of the narrator’s introduction on the track titled “A Story of Boy Meets Girl” and an enchanting cover of “Please, Please, Please, Let Me…” by Deschanel’s band, “She & Him.”
The “(500) Days of Summer” soundtrack should be a must have for anyone who wishes to revisit the film. The selection of songs was the perfect complement to the story, and can be the perfect complement to the moods of everyday life.
