- After four years away from music, Reggae dance-hall phenom Sean Paul returns with "Imperial Blaze," his fourth studio release.
"Imperial Blaze," which means "King's Fire," is a collection of hip-moving dance cuts, the same kind that propelled Sean Paul to the top of mainstream Reggae.
Except during his hiatus, Paul was dethroned by a younger crooner with the same name. Sean Kingston took radio by storm in 2007 with "Beautiful Girls," and kept the summer heat blazing with his latest single "Fire Burning."
When it comes to getting adrenaline pumping and feet moving, the two are fairly comparable. "Lace It" is a blend of Sean Paul's sometimes indecipherable dialect and clapping percussion that's every bit inviting as Paul's melodic hook.
Paul's shortcomings are in his lack of variety and depth. While he executes the fast-paced club anthem with accuracy (see lead single "Press It" or the popping "Don't Tease Me") the pace of the album hardly ever lets up. Dancing and shaking is fun and all, but halfway through "Imperial Blaze," even ears begin to grow tiresome.
And when Sean Paul does switch things up, he provides the worst tracks on the disc."Pepperpot" is a slow moving ballad about an object of the Reggae star's affection. The song is uninspired and, compared to the busyness of the rest of the album, sleepy and boring.
So asking for a little more duality might be too much for Sean Paul. He still has the touch to make you twist and wind on the dance floor, although there's a good deal of sonic repetition on "Imperial Blaze." The songs that do hit though are worthy of a place on any party time play list.
