Kotadama - Dichotomy
- The band Kotadama is made up of two brothers Chris and Evan Brown from New South Wales, Australia. Chris is said to be self-taught in guitar and keyboard, and he encouraged Evan to learn drums. From the sound they produce in this album, they have a talent for playing their instruments. They picked up Clint Fish and Scott Mallard to help pick up keyboard and bass guitar for their highly-anticipated first album, "Dichotomy."
Kotadama keep to themes with stories of love, loss, jealousy, and the uneven balance between humans and nature. They have a way through their lyrics and melodies to bring a powerful truth. The song “Earth Vs. Man” and “What We Left Behind” are the earthy, nature-oriented songs. From the start, there is a very strong U2 influence. I think I can even hear a native beat throughout both songs. “Calm Before The Storm” and “Land Of Dreams” take a more dreamy approach. “Calm” is more airy while “Dreams” is a harder beat which keeps a native prayer feel. “See You Tonight” and “As I Am” are the ballads, and they are radio ready. “Three Simple Words” is a trick title. The title makes it look like a love song, but the strong orchestra arrangement and lyrics turn it into a mournful song about lost love. “Time N Tide” starts out easy-going but comes in with a sturdy beat. The beat and lyrics leave me with the feeling this would be perfect for a movie soundtrack.
The songwriting is excellent. Kotadama’s "Dichotomy" really shows their ability to write intelligent songs. Many of the songs on the album are commercial-ready, which is not a bad thing. The melody compositions are full and flourishing. The only thing that disappointed me throughout the album was the heavy effect on the vocals. “See You Tonight” is the song where it is the most present and unnecessary. Otherwise, "Dichotomy" is a great start for Kotadama. I do believe they are a force the music industry will see more of in the future.
