The Sunstreak is based out of Rochester, NY. The band consists of Tony Rebis (vocals), Jason Sarkis (bass), Jack Flynn (guitar/vocals), Gary Foster (drums) and David Schuler (guitar/synth/vocals). The 11-track album, Once Upon A Lie, sounds like a mix of rock and pop with their heavy keyboard and synthesizer sound.
The first song on the album, "Once Upon A Lie," gives a young-at-heart feel to the album. It is an upbeat tempo song with great drums by Foster. Rebis, lead vocals, has a strong, youthful sound. "Great White Coma" is a radio-charged anthem with the repetitive lyrics and chorus. The slower ballad songs seem to have a stable sound. "Here In My Arms" has a fine sound with the guitar. It is the best ballad of the four slow songs on the album. "I'm Through" has a better sound in the vocals. Rebis comes across clear and strong. "What Else Can I Do?" starts out with bad synthesizer sound, but once the band is through with that, the guitar has a pleasant sound. The problem is all these songs come together at the end of the album and one after the other.
The keyboard is the main ingredient in this album. "Stay" has a lot of synthesized sound, along with "Everyday." "Everyday" just speeds up the tempo of the synth-sound. "Until I Met You" is full of repetitive lyrics, and notes. "Here I Go Again" is just what the title says. It is a song with recurring lyrics and pace.
The album is full of clich? lyrics of new love, lost love and relationships. "Until I met you my world was empty/Until I met you the sky was grey," is one of these hackneyed lyrics. It seems it is a perfect radio album. You can hear talent in the musicians' performance and the assembly of the musical score, but it ends up being an ordinary new wave rock album. Once Upon A Lie shows The Sunstreak's talent and potential but the band still has a lot of work to do to pull them away from the pack of mainstream.
