While most R&B artists sing about mainly about love, TQ set himself apart with cutting edge songwriting, branding his own type of “Reality R&B”. He started his professional music career with young B-Boy group “Coming of Age”. His own debut solo album They Never Saw Me Coming, which included the hits “Westside” and “Bye Bye Baby,” made him an instant worldwide success.
The single “Westside” debuted in the Top Ten in several countries, and in some countries at #1 the first week. The song stayed on top of the charts for weeks, collectively selling in excess of 1.5 million copies worldwide. TQ had fans from all over the world “throwing their dubs in the air” with the four-fingered, two-twisted in the middle, Westside symbol, including many fans who didn’t speak a lick of English.
TQ then followed up with a second album The Second Coming with the classic hit single and video “Daily,” which was distributed by Epic Records. For his third album, TQ joined forces with New Orleans Hip Hop Powerhouse Cash Money Records where he wrote numerous hits and garnered his first #1 with Lil Wayne’s “Way of Life” which TQ co-wrote and featured on.
TQ’s first indie release Listen, gave him a great big taste of ownership and he’s been hooked ever since! This album offered a perfect rendition of Prince’s hit ballad “Adore.” Many fans and critics stated it was one of the best Prince cover tunes they had ever heard. The album also included production from Mannie Fresh, formerly of Cash Money Records.
While he has had both major label and independent success, TQ has stayed on the independent route for his newest album Legendary. TQ’s freedom to create is equally as important for him as being able to control his business. “I guess for me the biggest thing now is ownership of the biggest slice of pie,” explains TQ. “Due to the state of the music business, in order to be successful I have to make the highest dollar amount per unit - whatever that unit may be. In order to do that you have to cut out a lot of the middle men. For my music, merchandise, and ticket sales, this situation allows me to get straight to the consumer, and that’s exactly where I want to be.” “I’m extremely excited about my new album and label” explains TQ. “In this genre of music I just am what I am. That’s a street reporter. I just report in song. I started this journey by telling a story thru my own eyes. That’s where I’m most comfortable and that’s where my fans are most entertained. If it ain’t broke, why fix it?” explains TQ.
After having such a phenomenal success with his first single “Westside,” TQ has been able to administer his own publishing and has built a pretty extensive catalog which he now owns and controls 100%. That discography is still growing by the day. TQ is a self proclaimed “studio rat” and throughout his career, his die hard fans from all walks of life have respected his true talent... songwriting. TQ has written, produced and collaborated with some of the top artists in the music industry from all genres including N’Sync, Lil Wayne, R.Kelly, Whitney Houston, Dru Hill, Jagged Edge, Ron Isley, Swizz Beatz, Petey Pablo, Another Level, LFO, Donny Osmond, Juvenile, BONE Thugz, Jim Jones, The Big Tymers, The Game, E40, Too Short, The Outlawz, and Sarah Conner to name a few. Needless to say, he loves staying in the studio making music.
A man of many talents, TQ has also branched off into an acting career. TQ landed four film roles in a short time, and plays the main character in two of them. Richard III, a Shakespeare film; Devil’s Grind, a hardcore urban film; and Rockin Meera, an internationally action-packed love story, are all due to release soon.
For the coming year TQ has a multitude of projects in the works for the US and Internationally. New records from his Kado roster of artists all including production and collaboration from TQ himself, plus a new website http://www.TheRealTQ.com, which will be the centralized location for TQ’s music, film, touring, and merchandise endeavors. “This is place for all my stuff man… I’m a Jack of all trades and this is where I put it all together, lol!” laughs TQ.
TQ has successfully created music, films, and performed all over the world. At the same time, he takes pleasure in remaining true to himself as Mr. Westside. “I’m just really determined,” asserts TQ. “I set goals for myself at an early age, and I refuse to not reach them all. There have been times when I’ve been knocked down, but I just get the f*ck back up. The next time I’ll see that punch coming and slip it. It’s all a learning experience, but you gotta keep that fight in you. If you don’t, you may as well throw in the towel. You gotta be built for it baby… I’m built for it.”
