‘Avatar’ Pulled from 1,628 Screens in China
Going to see the blockbuster movie, Avatar, in China just got a lot more difficult.
The Los Angeles Times reported that Chinese officials have opted to pull the movie from 1,628 2-D screens around the country after propaganda officials asked them to. What did they replace it with? A biography on philosopher Confucius.
According to the L.A. Times, the propaganda officials wanted the switch made for two reasons. The first being that Avatar is taking over the movie industry in China. By pulling it on certain screens, Chinese films will have a better shot to make some money. The second reason reported is that the film brings up the topic of forced evictions, a problem which many Chinese have been dealing with in real life.
Although the loss of these screens will hurt the income of Avatar, the 3-D showings in China, which are still allowed, continue to draw crowds and revenue.
