Take a break from all that holiday baking, shopping and traveling with one of these affordable and family-friendly ideas.
.) Plan a family ice-skating trip – Travel to a local indoor rink or see if your town sponsors seasonal outdoor ice-skating spots. It’s fun and a great workout!
.) Pick out your Christmas tree as a family – go to a local tree farm or even ask a private landowner if you can collect this year’s tree from their property.
.) Decorate your tree together – a bag of microwave popcorn, some hot cider and a little music brings everyone together.
.) Volunteer – Volunteering as a family at a local soup kitchen or holiday charity event can be a bonding experience and makes you feel great!
.) Donate – Decide on an organization you’d like to support together (like Santa Cops) and make a little donation of clothing, food or toys.
.) Christmas light tour – Pack the family in the car and bring the hot chocolate for a self-guided tour of your area’s best decorated homes.
.) Take in a show – This time of year The Nutcracker and Trans Siberian Orchestra are making their rounds through the U.S. and provide amazing holiday shows. Looking for something less costly? See if a local theater group or high school is showing a holiday favorite.
.) Host a Cookie Exchange – Ask everyone to make 1 dozen cookies and come to your house for an exchange. Provide the drinks and maybe a few holiday tunes to set the mood!
.) Have an ugly sweater party – Not a new idea but an affordable one nonetheless! Make it a potluck and have everyone bring his or her favorite dish.
.) Have a holiday movie marathon – Countless TV stations show a bundle of Christmas favorites during the entire month of December.
While none of these ideas are the latest and greatest, they sure will give you time to relax and spend some time with the people you love most. We’d love to hear what you’ll be doing with your family this year!
