120 Lb. Model Axed for Being "Too Fat."
Most women would do anything to be like Filippa Hamilton. Standing at 5'10" and weighing 120-pounds, the 23-year-old model has killer looks and an exotic Swedish-French heritage. Apparently though, this isn't enough.
On the "Today Show" Hamilton, an eight-year industry veteran, stated that she was fired from her modeling job at Ralph Lauren for being "too fat."
Hamilton, speaking publicly, stated that Ralph Lauren was like her second family. Despite this, this past april her agent was sent a termination of her contract. It read as follows: "We're terminating your services because you don't fit into the sample clothes that you need to wear."
On usmagazine.com, Hamilton states her belief that she was loyal and did everything she could, but the company has rebuttled with their own statement, commenting that her termination "was a result of her inability to meet the obligations under her contract with us."
Hamilton is going public in an attempt to raise awareness of the unrealistic and unhealthy expectations of the modeling industry. Specifically, Hamilton raises issue with a clearly photoshopped image of her on an ad in a mall in Japan. The image itself displays a disturbingly thin Hamilton, with a head that is bigger than her pelvis. Ralph Lauren has acknowledged that it is a digitially altered image and has vowed in a public statement to more honestly represent their models in the future.
It is the image itself that has led Hamilton to speak out. Says Hamilton, "I saw my face on this super-extremely skinny girl, which is not me. It makes me sad. It makes me think that Ralph Lauren wants to have this kind of image. It's an American brand ... and it's not healthy, and it's not right."
