The 2nd Annual San Francisco Green Film Festival celebrates sustainability

Jackie Morrison
Mother Earth Superstar

Mother Earth is the only true star of the San Francisco Green Film Festival. It is one of the only film festivals focused on all things green and will grace the Bay Area from March 1 to 7, 2012. Organizers expect to showcase 40 films representing the best in environmental issues. The festival anticipates visits from 50 filmmakers plus guest speakers to draw attention to the screenings. Hosted by the San Francisco Film Society, the entire festival will run all showtimes in Japantown. The festival is the first Green oriented film event on the West Coast and is a vehicle for environmental advocacy.

Special guests include San Francisco film maker John Shenk and his world premiere of the Island President, a story about exiled Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed. The event seeks to connect film and the environmental activism, a theme that plays heavily in the festival again this year. An all-festival pass sells for $200.

Other opportunities to mix and mingle with filmmakers are parties and after screening events plus panel discussions throughout the festival. There is also a sub-event from festival organizers called the 2nd Annual Student Education Program which is free to middle and senior high students and their teachers. It will take place on March 6 and is aimed at sparking the environmental spirit in adolescents as well as inspiring new documentary filmmakers for the next generation.

The film festival is also a community event and welcomes volunteers and sponsors. It is still early in its presence on the film festival circuit but its focus on the environment already makes it stand out. For more information please visit: http://sfgreenfilmfest.org.
