Adele won two awards at Tuesday’s Brit Awards in London, but when her acceptance speech was cut off by the show’s producers, she flipped her middle finger to the audience. The show’s organizers were later forced to issue an apology to the “Someone Like You” singer.
Adele won awards for British Album of the Year for 21 and British Female Solo Artist. She lost British Single of the Year to “What Makes you Beautiful” by One Direction. Ed Sheeran, who was nominated for four awards, won two, including Breakthrough Act and Male Solo Artist and Coldplay won British Group. Other winners include Bruno Mars (International Male Artist); Rihanna (International Female Artist); Foo Fighters (International Group); Lana Del Rey (International Breakthrough Artist); Blur (Outstanding Contribution to Music); Emeli Sandé (Critics’ Choice) and Ethan Johns (British Producer).
According to Rolling Stone, she began her speech for winning British Album of the Year, she said, “I'm so, so proud to be British and to be flying our flag, and I’m so proud to be in the room with all of you." She was going to say more, but the show’s host told her that she will have to be cut short so Blur could give an 11-minute closing performance. “Can I just say then, goodbye, and I’ll see you next time round, then?" she said, visibly annoyed, and then flipped her middle finger.
After the show, Adele issued an apology, according to The BBC, stressing that her gesture was not directed to her fans or the audience. "I flung the middle finger. That was for the suits at the Brit Awards, not my fans. I'm sorry if I offended anyone but the suits offended me," she said in a statement.
The Telegraph reports that the organizers later issued an apology to Adele. "We regret this happened and we send our deepest apologies to Adele that her big moment was cut short due to the live show over running,” they said.
ITV, which broadcast the show in Britain, also issued an apology, saying that the show was a live program, which “...was overrunning and we had to move on. We would like to apologize to Adele for the interruption."
Adele’s Brit wins come less than two weeks after she won all six Grammys she was nominated for.
