After some questionable Twitter-loving between exes Chris Brown and Rihanna, the singers leaked two collaborations on Twitter this Monday, “Turn Up the Music” and “Birthday Cake.”
The Grammys marked the three-year anniversary of the former lovers’ famous case of domestic violence—with Brown’s Grammy success for his R&B album causing a mixture of responses from viewers varying from outrage to forgiveness.
According to LA Times, The Recording Academy was rebuked for awarding the honor and giving Brown two performance slots.
Grammy Awards executive Ken Ehrlich defended the “Kiss Kiss” singer, saying, “We’re glad to have him back. I think people deserve a second chance, you know. If you’ll note, he has not been on the Grammys for the past few years and it may have taken us a while to kind of get over the fact that we were the victim of what happened.”
Now with the release of these collaborations, the Brown-bashing continues as confused fans question how Rihanna can forgive him. In the remix of “Birthday Cake,” Rihanna seductively sings, ”Remember how you did it, if you still wanna kiss it, then come and get it.”
As Rihanna defended Chris professionally in an interview with Rolling Stone—“What he did was a personal thing—it had nothing to do with his career”—so do her actions. They appear to reflect her willingness to move on from their troubled past towards a professional and friendly relationship.
Let's see if Rihanna fans and the rest of the public can accept this, too.
