The first image of Disney’s next big-budget film, an adaptation of the classic The Lone Ranger series has been released. The film stars The Social Network’s Armie Hammer as the title character with Johnny Depp as Tonto, his trusted sidekick.
Cinema Blend reports that producer Jerry Bruckheimer posted the image on his Twitter account. The image shows Hammer in the foreground with Depp, in full Native American makeup, standing in the background. Depp is wearing white makeup all over his face, with two black stripes coming down from his eyes.
“Tonto and The Lone Ranger Ride Again!” Bruckheimer promised in his tweet.
According to Collider, the film also stars Tom Wilkinson, William Fichtner, Barry Pepper, James Badge Dale, Ruth Wilson, and Helena Bonham Carter. Disney, which is releasing its latest big-budget epic John Carter this weekend, will not be releasing The Lone Ranger until May 31, 2013.
The Lone Ranger tells the story of the famous character through the eyes of Tonto, who tells the audience how John Reid became a man who fought for justice in the West.
Entertainment Weekly reports that Depp has said in an interview with the magazine that Tonto will have a more substantial role in the film.
The film will be Verbinski’s first since 2011’s Rango, which won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. Verbinski also directed the first three Pirates of the Caribbean films.
