'American Reunion' star Chris Klein says his dog helped him get over alcoholism

By Gina DiFalco,

American Reunion star Chris Klein once battled alcoholism, even seeking help for that addiction after his second DUI in 2010.

Following a stint at the Cirque Lodge in Utah, Klein can reflect back and realize that there was someone who played a big part in the actor getting help – his dog Chief, a German shepherd.

“He would get agitated that the alcohol was coming out, and I will be forever grateful to him for that," he told People.

He added, “He began to recognize the behavior shift in me when [I drank] alcohol and his behavior would change. Anybody that has a meaningful relationship with a dog will understand that the disappointment that I saw in his eyes, [it was] insurmountable."

Klein adopted Chief in 2008, and he was in the car with the actor when he got busted for his second DUI.

“I drank away anything and everything that was at home," Klein said of that night. "I had nothing to come home to. My beautiful, wonderful dog was taken care of, he didn't get hurt, he didn't even have to go to the pound that night. They allowed me to call a friend of mine in the area to pick up my dog."

Klein also told The Daily Beast about his juvenile relationship with actress Katie Holmes, who was on Dawson’s Creek at the time.

“I was working all the time and [Holmes] was involved in a TV show that filmed in Wilmington, North Carolina, so we’d hang on hiatuses,” he explained

“We were kids, man. We met before we could legally drink, so think about when you were 20 to 24, and that’s what it was. We were all working, successful, and having fun. It was late ‘90s, young Hollywood, and we were having a good time…. not unlike all those vampires today.”
