Demi Lovato’s struggles expanded far beyond what many can comprehend. The 19-year-old star recently opened up about her struggles with drugs and alcohol in an intimate interview.
The Disney starlet entered rehab nearly a year and a half ago, at the time claiming “emotional and physical issues.” Now, the star who has endured everything from an eating disorder to cocaine use, explains the struggles that celebrities deal with while growing up in the limelight.
According to People, the actress isn’t ready to appear in front of the camera just yet. She tells the British magazine, Fabulous, "I felt uncomfortable today. Knowing I have bad angles and the photographer can take a bad shot makes me insecure. But I'm a lot better than I used to be. In my first shoot after having treatment, I went into meltdown and ran away from the studio. So I've made progress."
The actress began struggling with Bulimia at the age of 12. She admits she would make herself sick “six times a day.” She admits that after feeling skinny wasn’t enough for her, she resorted to drugs. “Promoters gave me drugs and alcohol in restaurants or clubs. They wanted me to come back so I would be seen there. They were basically kissing my ass."
She adds, "I thought they were my friends. I thought I was having fun. Being a celebrity can be dangerous. Nobody says 'no'. That's why so many end up overdosing and dying. It could definitely have happened to me."
Lovato admits that leaving rehab was like being released from prison, but that she is trying every day.
Through the realization of drug use and the effects the limelight was having on her, Lovato grew depressed and began cutting her wrists and other places where people couldn’t see. She now has tattoos on both wrists covering her scars. One wrist reads “Stay” while the other reads “Strong.”
