'Empty Nest' actress Park Overall running for the Senate

Actress Park Overall is planning to run for the Senate in Tennessee.

"I have officially filed (papers) to run against Bob Corker for the U.S. Senate," she said Thursday. "Somebody had to do it and if nobody else will do it, I will do it."

Overall, 55, is best known for her role as Richard Mulligan’s nurse Laverne on the NBC series Empty Nest, which ran from 1988-1995. She’s also appeared on series such as Reba and The Critic, as well as TV-movies like Fifteen and Pregnant and The Price of a Broken Heart.

She plans to run for Tennessee’s Democratic party.

Republicans have held both of the state’s Senate seats for nearly 20 years. Democrats hope Overall’s involvement will appeal to rural voters as well as the talk show circuit, since she is known for her firebrand personality.

“I’m a good Democrat and there doesn’t seem to be one around,” she said. “I’m going for broke.”

One issue she plans to focus on is the environment, since she is a long-time critic of nuclear power. She has spoken at numerous hearings and public meetings about the operation of the Nuclear Fuel Services plant in Unicoi County. Overall also plans to tackle women’s issues such as anti-abortion measures and birth control.
