Beloved Hollywood couple Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon have been revealed to be distant cousins.
The couple has been married for 23 years. Their ‘other’ family connection was discovered on the PBS series Finding Your Roots.
Host Henry Louis Gates Jr. used DNA technology to trace the genealogy of celebrities.
"They are indeed distant cousins," Gates said when the link was uncovered on Sunday’s episode. "So talk about six degrees of separation, right?"
Bacon and Sedgwick have two children- 22-year-old Travis and 19-year-old Sosie. Gates stated that Bacon and Sedgwick are both the descendants of slave owners.
The host also explained that, in order to sign on for the show, people must allow their family history to be shared, even if some of it is uncomfortable.
"We don't have any prior agreements with anyone," he explained. "We have a team of genealogists. We have different genealogists for different people -- some are more expert on African-Americans, some on Jewish people, some on Ashkenazi-Jewish people, some on Asian people. But whatever we find, we try to boil it down to three or four narrative arcs."
On a previous episode, actor Robert Downey Jr. learned that there was a murder in his family’s past.
"He had no idea," said Gates. "I'm getting him reading the headlines from The New York Times about the murder of these ancestors."
