Legendary actor Morgan Freeman came forward on Thursday to deny rumors that he is engaged to step-granddaughter E'Dena Hines. A statement from the 74-year-old actor and Hines was released to the media on Thursday in an attempt to put the rumors to rest.
E! News received a statement, in which Freeman says, “The recent reports of any pending marriage or romantic relationship of me to anyone are defamatory fabrications from the tabloid media design to sell papers,” adding, "What is even more alarming is that these fabrications are now being [picked up] by the legitimate press as well."
Hines also said that the reports are “not only untrue, they are also very hurtful to me and my family." Hines is the 27-year-old granddaughter of Freeman’s first wife, Jeanette Adair Bradshaw.
According to TMZ, there were rumors that the two have been dating for almost 10 years and had plans to get married soon. Hines is often seen with Freeman, who finalized his divorce with second wife Myrna Colley-Lee in 2007, as his plus one at movie premieres. She has also accompanied him to awards shows.
As E! News notes, it is slightly puzzling as to why Freeman and Hines sent a statement out now. The last time there were reports of them getting engaged was in a 2009 National Enquirer story. His representative told TMZ that he never responded at the time because he didn’t want to "dignify these stories by commenting.” Now that "mainstream media" are reporting on it, he decided to comment, although Freeman does not specify what reports he is talking about.
Freeman is an Oscar winner for his work in Million Dollar Baby. His next film is The Dark Knight Rises.
