After weeks of rumors and speculation, sources are confirming that Britney Spears is in the final stages of negotiations with X Factor bigwigs to become a judge on the upcoming season of the Simon Cowell-created show.

Spears will reportedly get a record-breaking $15 million payday for voicing her opinions of singing hopefuls on the second season of the U.S.-based show, a little bit more than Jennifer Lopez negotiated for sitting in the judge chair over at American Idol.

Entertainment Weekly reports that both Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson were also names being thrown around to fill the chairs of ousted judges Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul.

Deadline reports that this past weekend, negotiations reached the final stages when big deal points were agreed upon on both sides.

Cowell has spoken candidly about his interest in having Spears join the show. He told Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush, “I’m fascinated by Britney. The fact that she’s one of the most talked about — not just pop stars but people — in the world today, means that you’ve got this star power.”

He added, “This girl has resilience. I would think that if she’s managed to sustain a family, a career, which is tough, (X Factor would be) a walk in the park. I would be fascinated to hear what she has to say. She’s still hot, she’s still having hit records and she’s still controversial. There’s a reason for that.”
