Top 10 Moments for One Direction

By Jenna Katharine Nelson,

One Direction is the hottest band that didn't exist in 2010. The British five-some has taken teenage girls and the world by storm, setting records and selling out concerts like the glory days of their 1999-predecessors The Backstreet Boys and 'NSYNC. Here's their top ten moments:

10. Chart-Topping Singles
Their first three singles have all topped out in the Top 10: "One Night" hit the No. 9 spot, "Gotta Be You" finished in No. 3, and "What Makes You Beautiful" hit the coveted No. 1.

9. Performing on The Today Show
On March 13th, the band made their American TV debut, performing live in Rockefeller Center for The Today Show. The boys sang hits "What Makes You Beautiful," "One Thing" and "More Than This" for thousands of fans while chatting with host Ann Curry about girls, fame and the band. In true Brit style, they rolled up in a custom double-decker bus.

8. Boy Band Drama
One Direction's ride hasn't been all swooning girls and breaking records; the band is also in a bit of a legal bind. California band One Direction is suing the Brits for copyright infringement and damages, saying they came up with the name first. While Cali's One Direction has been recording since 2009 under that name, they only incorporated in 2011. And the Brits are determined to fight for their right to party - as One Direction.

7. Taking Television by Storm
On March 31, the band performed on Nickelodeon's Kid's Choice Awards. A week later, they guest starred in an episode of iCarly, which aired the same day as their appearance on Saturday Night Live. These boys are busy!

6. Joining the Nickelodeon Family
Directioners can breathe easy knowing they'll get more face time with their heart throbs: the band is scheduled for their own television show on Nickelodeon. No word on what the show will be like, but it's due out late 2012. Nick confirmed the news via Twitter:

5. $3.2 Million Bonus Check from Simon Cowell
Cowell reportedly cut the band a £10 million bonus for their "hard work" over the past seven months. With today's exchange rate, that's an easy $3.2 million a piece.

4. BRIT Best Single
The band beat down Brit heavyweights Olly Murs, Jessie J and The Wanted for Best British Single at the BRIT Awards 2012 for their debut, 'What Makes You Beautiful.' The band have so far won every award they've been nominated for.

3. Tickets Selling Out in 10 Minutes
One Direction has been busy. Since September, they've toured the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and the USA. With tickets sold out across the world, an upcoming December 3rd concert at Madison Square Garden sold out in less than 10 minutes. But don't fret Directioners, their 2013 25-city North American tour has already been announced, and more dates are likely to be added.

2. Hottest UK Band since the Spice Girls, maybe even The Beatles
One Direction may be rivaling The Beatles number of screaming fans, but they have accomplished a first for UK music. The band is the first UK group ever to head straight to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart with their freshman album. "Up All Night" scored a strong 176,000 copies it's first week. The previous record? The Spice Girls' first album "Spice" debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard charts in 1997.

1. Taking Nicole Sherzinger's Advice
Without the ex-Pussycat Doll in the judge's seat, One Direction may never have happened. When Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Harry Styles and Zayn Malik failed to qualify individually for the boy's category on The X Factor UK, Sherzinger suggested they form a group and compete together. Best advice you ever took boys!
