Gibson reports that the band will appear on Idol on May 23, performing “Legendary Child,” which will serve as the lead single of the band’s forthcoming album. It will also appear on the soundtrack for this summer’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation.

While Aerosmith’s lead singer, Steven Tyler, is on Idol's judges panel, along with Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson, not everyone in the band was initially happy with that addition.

"It's a reality show designed to get people to watch that station and sell advertising. It's one step above Ninja Turtles," said Joe Perry when Tyler first joined the panel.

His feelings towards the show seem to have changed, as he appeared on the show in March to sing “Happy Birthday” to Tyler.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Perry cleared up his comments on Idol, saying that they had to do more with the announcement of Tyler joining the panel rather than the show itself.

Tyler had not shared the news that he joined Idol until it was announced, despite the fact the band was on tour at the time.

“It wasn't about the show – it was about how we found out about it. I was pissed off about that whole thing, but I've played on it before and the band is gonna play on it in the last episode of the season to debut the new single. So it's not about the show, it's about how we found out about it. It was a bit of a shock and it took us off balance,” said Perry.

As for the status of the new album, Perry said, “It's really close. We've started to mix. We've mixed a couple of the songs already, but I guess this week we're really kind of rolling into mix mode. We have a couple of tracks left to finish up, just to put some overdubs on, but we're kind of going from the final, final recording tracks to mixing this week.”

The still untitled album is expected to be released this fall after the band completes their Global Warming Tour with Cheap Trick. The tour kicks off on June 16 in Minneapolis, Minnesota and runs through August 8.
