Phillip Phillips is considered the favorite to win American Idol, which will crown its champion Wednesday night. Phillips has had trouble with kidney issues, which have been reported throughout the season. In March, he had been rushed to the hospital for treatment and held off further treatment to finish the season. It looks like he has held off on it long enough and will have to undergo surgery as soon as the finale is over.
E! News reports that the Georgia native will have to undergo kidney surgery after he finishes a round of publicity following the finale.
While it might not affect the press tour he has to do in New York city after the show, the recovery could force him to miss at least two dates on the Idol summer tour.
TMZ actually reported last week that Phillips’ personal doctor had grown worried about his condition. When he was rushed to the hospital in March, it was just a temporary fix, but his kidney problems had only worsened since then.
The issues were also hampering his singing ability, which explains why he had to miss taking part in several pre-recorded segments.
His doctor advised him to get surgery right after the finale. Based on E!’s report, it looks like Phillips has taken that advice.
Phillips performed Billy Joel’s “Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song)” on Tuesday night’s performance finale. He is going up against Jessica Sanchez for the Idol crown.
