Fifty Shades of Grey readers who can only see The Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder as Christian Grey have at least one person who agrees with them: the actor himself. In an interview at the CW upfront presentation in New York on Thursday, Somerhalder said that getting the role would be “amazing.”
“I think it would be an amazing thing,” the former Lost actor told MTV News.
He added that his role on The Vampire Diaries has given the necessary experience to help him play Christian Grey. "One interesting thing is, by the virtue of playing Damon for now a few years, [he's] 170-plus-years-old, in love with an 18-year-old, I officially have a lot of experience seducing younger women. I'm not saying, I'm just saying,” he said.
EL James’ novel has raised eyebrows thanks to the steamy sexual relationship between Christian Grey and young college graduate Anastasia Steele. Even Somerhalder admitted that he was a little flushed by those scenes. "A little bit, yeah, there's blushing," he told MTV.
This isn’t actually the first time that Somerhalder has brought up playing the role. Earlier this month, he told Ryan Seacrest almost the same thing he told MTV. “I absolutely would be up for that... It could be amazing. It could be very, very amazing,” he said.
Many think that Somerhalder’s Vampire Diaries co-star and girlfriend Nina Dorbev would be great to play Anastasia Steele opposite Somerhalder as Christian Grey, but she isn’t too keen on that idea. “I don't know if that's a good idea,” she told MTV. “I think it's best for any of the actors on The Vampire Diaries to kind of do their own things ... and create new characters. And as much as you try when you shoot a movie, if it's two of the same people, the fans will always see you as ... they'll see me as Elena and they'll see him as Damon if we do a film together.”
