Singer Jewel is set to play music legend, June Carter Cash, in a film for the Lifetime network.
The film has been tenatively titled The June Carter Cash Story. It is based on the book Anchored in Love: an Intimate Portrait of June Carter Cash, written by her son John.
The upcoming biopic will focus on her childhood in Virginia, the beginning of her musical career when she worked with legends like Elvis Presley, and her turbulent marriage to her third husband, country star Johnny Cash. The new movie will focus on her efforts to assist him through his substance abuse problem.
Filming is set to begin this summer in Atlanta. The film is set to be televised later this year.
Cash died in 2003 at age 73. Three years later, actress Reese Witherspoon won an Academy Award for portraying her in Walk the Line (2005), which co-starred Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny.
“Many people know about the legendary love story of Johnny and June," said Lifetime executive Rob Sharenow. "But June Carter Cash has her own epic journey filled with triumphs, tragedies, loves and losses. This movie will explore all aspects of the woman behind the icon, and we're thrilled Jewel will be playing the title role."
The film marks Jewel’s first starring role. Matt Ross is set to play Johnny.
