Marvel Comics has always liked to get topical in the pages of its comics and the company, now owned by Disney, is set to do that again. It is hosting its first same-sex wedding in the pages of the latest issue of Astonishing X-Men.
In Astonishing X-Men #50, which hits stands on Wednesday, the openly gay mutant Northstar, a Canadian with super speeds, will propose to his longtime boyfriend, Kyle, reports USA Today. The wedding will take place in the following issue.
Marvel's editor in chief Axel Alonso told USA Today “Whenever you tell a story that touches upon an issue people are passionate about, you open yourself up to controversy and some very heated comments, both supportive and critical...But as long as we continue to tell good stories, with nuanced characters from different walks of life, we feel that we're making our comics accessible to the widest possible audience.”
Aolonso said that the company first talked about having the character marry when New York legalized same-sex marriage last June, especially since most of its characters live in New York.
X-Men writer Marjorie Liu told Rolling Stone that Northstar and Kyle’s story can be seen as an inspiring tale of outsiders among outsiders. “Here are two people, trying to live their lives – mutant and gay, black and gay – empowered in their own ways, but also fringe-dwellers...And they're making it happen. They're living life on their own terms. It doesn't matter that it's a superhero comic, the message is: You can do the same thing,” Lie said.
Northstar made history in 1992 when he became the first openly gay superhero for Marvel. However, his marriage will not be the first same-sex marriage in comics history. Archie Comics had a same-sex marriage in Life With Archie earlier this year, which caused groups to come out against it. Alonso told USA Today that he understands that Northstar’s marriage will likely receive criticism from groups as well.
