Minka Kelly is in talks to become the latest actress to play Jackie Kennedy in an upcoming film about the famous Kennedy family. The new film, entitled The Butler, will chronicle Eugene Allen, who served as the White House's butler for 50 years and who worked for eight different presidents.
The actress, who is best known for her role in Friday Night Lights, is one of the few famous faces in the supposed star-studded cast. The Toronto Sun reports that Forest Whitaker will play Allen and Oprah Winfrey will play his wife. Reports also suggest that Jane Fonda has signed on to play another First Lady, Nancy Reagan, while Matthew McConaughey, Alan Rickman, John Cusack, and Nicole Kidman are said to make cameo appearances.
The film will be directed by Lee Daniels, who has directed films like Precious and, more recently, The Paperboy. CinemaBlend reports that the entire film is based on an article about Allen in the Washington Post, written on the eve of Barack Obama's election as President. Allen served the White House during a time when American laws and attitudes regarding African Americans were complicated and controversial.
Daniels told Screen Daily, “I connected with it because it is ultimately a father son story with a civil rights backdrop," adding, "In my lifetime there were separate water fountains, swimming pools and toilets for blacks. People forget that. This is such an exciting journey for me.”
