Zac Efron is moving from the sweet school boy in High School Musical to underwear-donning Jack James in The Paperboy.
The 24-year old bared nearly all in the Cannes preview of his newest film The Paperboy. The film is based on the novel by Pete Dexter, which co-stars Nicole Kidman, Matthew McConaughey and John Cusack, LA Times reports.
According to the New York Daily News the film, set in 1960, centers on Efron as an ‘aspiring journalist.’ His character Jack is set out to help his brother, played by McConaughey, to investigate an injustice. Efron’s character is seen on numerous occasions in nothing but his underwear.
Efron falls for Kidman, who plays a sultry “femme fatal” who is in love with a death row inmate, played by Cusack. Efron discussed the level of discomfort of playing Jack, saying, “I don’t think I was supposed to feel comfortable. It’s like life. This character is supposed to be learning the ways of the world, and that can be very uncomfortable. But it’s also exciting.”
The Paperboy is directed by Lee Daniels, who also didn't mind having the 24-year old trot around in his underwear. He jokes, "He’s a good-looking guy...And I’m gay. What do you want?”
Efron isn't the only one stepping out of his comfort zone. Cusack is notorious for playing loveable characters, while Kidman shows how to cure a jellyfish sting! Kidman said of her role, "I’d been looking as an actor for something raw and something dangerous."
