Georgia native Phillip Phillips was crowned the latest American Idol winner in Wednesday night’s season finale.
Phillips looked stunned when host Ryan Seacrest gave him the life-changing news. He then gave Sanchez a hug and received congratulations from the other contestants who were brought back to give final performances. Phillips was in tears as he sang “Home,” notes The Associated Press.
While some are speculating that “Home” will be Phillips’ first single, he told The Hollywood Reporter otherwise. “The song that I did tonight that supposedly is my single, it's not really my single, I told them it's not my single,” Phillips said of the song, written by Greg Holden and Drew Pearson. Instead, he would rather start his career by releasing his own material.
"I have my own stories to tell...[But] I couldn't do my song [on the finale]; we just didn't have enough time,” he told THR.
“Home” still has significance for Phillips. When explaining backstage why he was brought to tears, he said, “I wasn't thinking about anything, not even the song. I wasn't really wanting to sing or anything. I just started thinking about the whole journey and how far all of us have come, and how we've made it. It's so overwhelming.”
Phillips told the press that the experience “feels so unreal. It still hasn't sunk in yet. It's such a blessing. I have no idea why this happened. I just want to play music and I'm just a lucky guy.”
He also admitted, “I'm not a great singer. I just love having fun up on stage and playing good music and getting the crowd into it. Music's fun, dude."
The AP notes that Phillips and Sanchez received a record-breaking 132 million votes. That broke the previous record set last year by 10 million votes.
