To the rest of the world she is a British monarch, but to Prince William and Prince Harry, Queen Elizabeth II is just their grandmother.
Katie Couric interviewed the two royals for a special marking of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee – a celebration of 60 years of the Queen’s reign – and was given a glimpse into each of their relationships with the Queen.
William described the time just after the announcement of his engagement to Kate Middleton, People magazine reports.
“I was given a list in the first meeting of 777 names, and not one of them on there I knew,” William explained. “So it was a bit daunting and it was like, well, that seems to be the guest list’s sorted, but no room for friends or family. And I wasn’t too happy about it.”
But the young Prince needn’t worry because Queen Elizabeth, 86, was quick to come to the aid of her grandson, like a typical grandmother would.
“I rang her for a bit of moral support and a bit of backup,” William told Couric. “She said, ‘Ridiculous. Get rid of the list. Start from your friends.’”
According to the Daily Mail, Couric asked Prince Harry if his relationship with his grandparents is as formal as some would imagine or if it is a typical grandparent-grandchild relationship.
“But if you wanted to, could you just say ‘Hi, can I come over for a cup of tea?’” Couric asked. To which Harry replied, “I’d like to think so!”
The relationship between Prince William, 29, Prince Harry, 27, and their grandmother may be atypical due to the fact that instead of spending her day playing card games with her friends in a retirement community she is tending to her duties as a constitutional monarch, but she is still just "granny" to the two young royals.
“I still think she’s just my grandmother, really. I’m probably a bit of a cheeky grandson, my brother as well,” William said, according to People. “I always remember having a healthy respect for my grandmother.”
The Jubilee Queen With Katie Couric airs May 29 at 9 p.m. EDT on ABC.
