Time magazine cover prompts debate

By Robert Kirchgassner,

The cover of the newest issue of Time magazine has, not surprisingly, led to comments from mothers everywhere.

The cover depicts a woman holding her 4-year-old son with his mouth on one of her breasts.

The woman in question, 26-year-old Jamie Lynne Grumet, is set to appear on the Today show Friday to discuss what has become a notorious cover photo.

"Oh my gosh! Aram and I are on the cover of @timemagazine,” she tweeted.

The text accompanying the picture refers to attachment parenting, and includes a profile of Dr. William Sears.

The issue itself depicts other mothers breast feeding older children.

Breast feeding is recommended for the first six to twelve months of a child’s life.

Attachment parenting extends that, along with encouraging other practices such as parents sleeping in the same bed with their children.

One celebrity who supports the method is actress Mayim Bialik, who is known for her roles on the shows Blossom and The Big Bang Theory.

While the cover itself is drawing the most disbelief, some people are also expressing shock at the fact that children as old as 5 are still breast feeding.

“When you think of breast-feeding, you think of mothers holding their children, which was impossible with some of these older kids,” photographer Martin Schoeller said. “I liked the idea of having the kids standing up to underline the point that this was an uncommon situation.”
