Tom Gabriel, the lead singer and guitarist for punk rockers Against Me!, made his live debut as Laura Jane Grace this weekend at the band’s first show since he announced that he was transgender.
According to Rolling Stone, Against Me! took the stage on Saturday in San Diego at Humphreys Concerts by the Bay. They played a 40-minute set that featured six new songs, including “Transgender Dysphoria Blues.” This will also be the title track for their new album.
Grace wore a loose-fitting top, tight black jeans and featured her trademark screaming vocals. "I was worried that some people expected me to come out looking like Little Bo Peep or something," Grace told Rolling Stone.
Grace kept the on-stage banter to a minimum and never even referenced her new name in-between songs. E! News notes that she is currently two months into hormone replacement therapy, which will redistribute her muscle mass.
Grace revealed that she was transgender in Rolling Stone earlier this month. Her supportive wife Heather will stay at Grace’s side and did attend Saturday’s concert. The couple have a 2-year-old daughter.
The performance was warmly received by the crowd, especially when Grace sang, “If I could have chosen/I would have been born a woman,” lyrics from their 2007 song “The Ocean.”
Against Me! is touring with The Cult through August.
