American Idol winner Phillip Phillips is out of the hospital after surgery. He doesn’t plan on taking any time off and is ready to head back to work as the singing competition’s latest winner.
“I'm out of the hospital and back to work!” Phillips told E! News Monday. “Looking forward to the future.”
As People magazine notes, Phillips dealt with kidney problems throughout Idol’s 11th season, but he stuck it out and eventually won over Jessica Sanchez. His father, Phillip Phillips, Sr., told the media following his son’s win that he underwent eight separate surgeries during the season.
“He's been doing [well], but it's just grueling hours and it's just amazing what he's done through the journey...Eight operations since we started American Idol...He's hitting 50 percent, but he's still up there swinging away,” his father told People last month.
E! News reports that Phillips underwent kidney surgery at a Los Angeles hospital and was only released Sunday afternoon. While he’s been able to sign plenty of autographs, the 21-year-old will need plenty of rest before the Idol tour starts next month. He is expected to take part in the first American Idols Live show on July 6 in Detroit.
Phillips performed “Home” as his coronation song. The track debuted at No. 2 on Billboard’s Digital Songs Chart, earning the best debut for an Idol coronation song in the show’s history.
