Entertainment blogger Perez Hilton announced on Tuesday that he will be releasing his first album compilation entitled Pop Up! #1 through L.A.-based music group, Opus Label. Pop Up! will feature 18 tracks from rising electronic and pop acts like Kerli, My Name is Kay, The Cataracs, and others. The Hilton-curated album will be released traditionally on CD and digitally on iTunes as well as through the “Perez Hilton Music Tee Series” on Aug. 7.
Billboard describes the innovative “Music Tee Series” as an alternative means of getting music where listeners can “purchase music via a collection of t-shirts and tank tops with album-inspired artwork on the front and a digital hangtag that allows customers to download the compilation as well as artist biographies and photographs.” These music t-shirts will be available in stores throughout the country and online.
Among the musicians featured on Pop Up! is synth-pop artist Kerli with her latest single, “Zero Gravity.” The song peaked at number six on Billboard's dance music charts earlier this year. Kerli was featured on Almost Alice, a Disney-released set inspired by 2010's Alice in Wonderland film. She is also known for being the first Estonian artist to enter Billboard's albums chart when her debut record peaked at number 126 in 2008.
Vampire Diaries actress Kat Graham is also featured on the album with her first major label single, “Put Your Graffiti On Me.” The song has received much critical acclaim, including from pop star Britney Spears, who reccomended “Graffiti” on Twitter. It would later peak at number 45 on Billboard's dance charts earlier this year.
Rising electro-pop duo The Cataracs are also included on Hilton's compilation with their song, “Synthesizer.” They are best known for helping discover electronic act Dev and for producing Far East Movement's number one hit, “Like a G6.” The Cataracs are now stepping out on their own on this set.
My Name is Kay makes the cut on Hilton's album with her song, “Diddy Dum.” The eclectic dance track was released as Kay's first single in her home country of Canada earlier this year. She recently collaborated with Cobra Starship on “#1Nite” and DJ Steve Aoki on “Control.” She's in good company with the aforementioned acts and the other artists on Pop Up!
Hilton's distributor, Opus Label, was started by Jeremy Wineberg and Miguel Jiménez earlier this year. The burgeoning label is comprised of Opus Music, Opus Publishing and upcoming ICON TEE, which is similar to Hilton's “Music Tee Series.” The label's music brand released its first compilation, simply titled Opus Label One, in March. Wineberg and Jiménez are readying Opus Label Two for release next month, featuring more sophisticated electronic tunes curated by the two founders.
Pop Up! #1 is Hilton's first foray into compilation album industry, but not necessarily his first experience with music and musicians. Billboard reports that Hilton manages artists IM5, CJ Baran, Kalie Shorr, VanJess, MattyB, and other musicians. To support further up-and-coming acts, Hilton created the live music series, “One Night In...,” in 2008.
