This week, reports and rumors surfaced that Today Show co-anchor Ann Curry was very close to leaving her position and will become a foreign correspondent for NBC News. Fans of Curry are rallying around her, though, hoping to stop NBC and have created an online petition to save her job.
The reports started Wednesday night, when the New York Times published a story reporting that Curry and NBC were in talks to have her leave Today and that she was partly to blame for Today’s ratings decline. According to The Wrap, though, Curry’s fans are not just sitting on the sidelines and watching their favorite co-anchor get fired.
Iraqi war veteran and Phoenix resident Stephen Crowley has started a petition on Change.org, which has over 13,400 signatures already. “Ann Curry's sensitivity to the human experience telegraphs through her journalism, to me and many other fans and viewers,” Crowley wrote. “Her compassion and dedication to her audience radiates every time she stands in front of a camera. She connects with people. She has definitely connected with me.”
Unfortunately for her fans, sources for TMZ say that she could be gone by next week, just a year after taking the position. When she took over for Meredith Vieira, she signed a guaranteed $10 million contract with NBC and has three years left.
NBC and Curry have not commented on the reports and Curry has continued to work on Today, despite the reports. It is speculated that Savannah Guthrie will replace her.
