Rising indie pop singer Sky Ferreira premiered the music video for her latest single, “Red Lips,” this morning. The new song previews her upcoming debut album, Wild at Heart.
“Red Lips” debuted on controversial fashion photographer, Terry Richardson's official website. While Ferreira has suffered leaks of her music in the past, “Red Lips” was kept under wraps and was not heard in full until the video's premiere earlier today.
Ferreira's breakthrough material fit under the electro-pop genre, like feathery sophistication behind 2010's “One” or most of the songs on her As If! EP, but with “Red Lips,” she sports a more alternative and indie sound. The new song's rock credibility and influence is definitely there with Garbage's Shirley Manson sharing co-writing credit on “Red Lips” with Ferreira.
The music video features Ferreira in a bra top and underwear with nothing much else on but the red lipstick she sings about coating her mouth. As the clip progresses, Ferreira keeps putting on an excessive amount of lipstick until it encompasses whole face. She looks like a red-faced devil by the video's end as she smears the lipstick over her body. “Red Lips” also stars Toby the Tarantula, a spider that crawls all over the singer in Terry Richardson-directed clip.
“Thank you @Terry_World @garbage @GregKurstin & most of all Toby,” Ferreira wrote on her Twitter account upon unveiling "Red Lips."
Ferreira made the decision herself to release the song and shoot a video for it. She has suffered many record label drawbacks in her burgeoning career so this time she decided to trust her own instinct to put out “Red Lips” as an artistic endeavor and not for any sales or clout. Capitol Records did not want to fund a video until the album's release, but Ferreira still shot the video anyway and her label ended up digging the clip.
“It’s not about youtube hype or sales with this song. It’s about me growing as an artist & an adult. I MADE EVERY DECISION MYSELF from what I wore & what I did,” Ferreira wrote on her Tumblr account prior to “Red Lips” release.
“I’m proud of One & As If….but this is something different and a lot more closer to who I am as a person if that makes any sense,” Ferreira further writes.
