Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted led a big weekend at the box office last week and, while there are two new high-profile releases hitting theaters this Father’s Day weekend, the animated PG-rated film is expected to stay at the top.
Last weekend, Madagascar 3 debuted with a $60.4 million opening and only had to compete against Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, which made $50 million. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Madagascar 3 has already passed $200 million worldwide and could add a little more than $30 million this weekend.
Both That’s My Boy and Rock of Ages feature heavy doses of ‘80s nostalgia, with Adam Sandler wearing an ‘80s mullet in his comedy, while Rock of Ages is built entirely on ‘80s rock songs. Warner Bros.’ Rock of Ages is expected to come in at number two with around $28 million, predicts Box Office Mojo. Tom Cruise should be a big draw for audiences.
The film is based on the hit Broadway play and cost Warner Bros. $65 million to produce, notes Entertainment Weekly.
Sandler’s That’s My Boy, which co-stars Andy Samberg as his son, is the former Saturday Night Live star’s first film since last year’s Jack and Jill, which grossed just $74 million. His new comedy is expected to make $23 million, although THR gives it a smaller opening at $19 million at the most.
Scott’s Prometheus is expected to make at least over $20 million in its second weekend, dropping to number four. Snow White and the Huntsman is expected to come in fifth with at least around $11 million.
New specialty releases include IFC’s Your Sister’s Sister with Emily Blunt and ATO’s The Woman in the Fifth with Ethan Hawke and Kristin Scott Thomas.
