By Robert Kirchgassner ,

A movie based on the beloved PBS series Sesame Street is in the works from 20th Century Fox.

Joey Mazzarino, a longtime writer for the show, will write the script.

The series itself was created by Jim Henson and premiered in 1969. It introduced the world to Big Bird, Bert, Ernie, Grover, Elmo, the Cookie Monster and Oscar the Grouch. It has won 138 Emmy Awards and has been seen in dozens of countries. It became known for teaching children skills such as math and spelling, as well as lessons about sharing and friendship.

Previous movies based on the show were Follow That Bird (1985) and The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland (1999).

A film based on another Jim Henson series, Fraggle Rock, is also in the planning stages for the big screen.

The Muppets (2011), which featured Kermit and Miss Piggy opposite actress Amy Adams, was a box office hit. Previous films with the Muppets include The Muppet Movie (1979), The Great Muppet Caper (1981), The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984) and The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992).

Shawn Levy is expected to direct the film. He has previously directed such films as Night at the Museum (2006).

Henson died in 1990 of an illness at age 53.
