While ABC’s Good Morning America has to battle with NBC’s The Today Show for ratings, the network is moving into new territory with an afternoon edition of the show called Good Afternoon America that it hopes will pick up declining afternoon ratings. The new show starts this afternoon.
Back in April, ABC announced the cancellation of The Revolution, a daytime talk show that failed to draw many viewers after it replaced One Life To Live. ABC announced plans right away for an extra hour of GMA, tentatively titled GMA In The Afternoon.
GAA will be hosted by Lara Spencer and Josh Elliot. In an interview with The New York Daily News, Spencer, who is GMA’s lifestyle anchor, said that she is “excited” to take the new role.
“I think relaxed is a great word for what we’re trying to do in the afternoon,” she said. “We’re going to tackle topics that are relevant. I’m sure there will be stories that carry over from Good Morning America. But the tone is going to be more relaxed, more informal, very conversational, very real.”
GAA’s theme song, “Good Afternoon,” was performed by country group Little Big Town. They have been scheduled to play the song on the show on Aug. 2.
GAA will run for nine weeks this summer and you can check out a preview of the show below:
