DreamWorks plans theme park in N.J.

By Robert Kirchgassner ,

DreamWorks Animation has announced plans to launch a theme park to be located at the American Dream complex at New Jersey’s Meadowlands.

The park will be created with conglomerate Triple Five Worldwide. It will be an enclosed facility which will have characters from DreamWorks films such as Madagascar (2005) and the Shrek franchise.

The park will have rides, retail venues, as well as a water park, an ice-skating rink and theaters.

DreamWorks previously considered Dubai, China, and Abu Dhabi as locations for a theme park, but those plans fell through.

American Dream opened in 2009 but has remained vacant due to plans for attractions at the location failing. This has led some to view the proposed amusement park with apprehension.

“There were enough false starts that retailers want to see some substance,” said Ron DeLuca, a partner at R. J. Brunelli & Company, which represents many retailers.“Until American Dream becomes a reality,” he said, “it is difficult to get retailers to make hard commitments.”

The park has a tentative opening date of Sept. 2014.
