Eric Dane leaves 'Grey's Anatomy' after six-year run as Dr. McSteamy

By Gina DiFalco,

It has been confirmed that Eric Dane will be leaving ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy after six years on the show.

Dane said in a statement to TV Line, “I am extremely grateful to everyone at Grey’s, ABC and Shondaland for the experience and memories I have had over the course of this run. It has been wonderful to work alongside and learn from a creative force such as Shonda Rhimes.”

Creator Shonda Rhimes also opened up about Dr. Mark Sloan, or “Dr. McSteamy”’s departure, saying he was “one of the most beloved characters on Grey’s Anatomy.”

She also said he “did not come to this decision lightly, but after much consideration and conversations, he and I have decided that this is the right time for his storyline to end.”

“We’re a big family here at Grey’s with a long history together and Eric will always remain an important part of our family,” she went on to say. “I wish him the best and I look forward to watching him as he continues to steam up the big and small screen.”

CNN reports that recent departures from the show include Kim Raver and Chyler Leigh.

The longtime medical drama will return to ABC this fall on Sept. 27.
