Fred Willard went on NBC’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon Thursday to make light of the embarrassing lewd conduct situation the 72-year-old comic found himself in last week.
Willard had been arrested at a Hollywood adult theater called the Tiki Theater on July 18 when undercover LAPD officers found him with his pants down and masturbating. He and his lawyer maintained that he was innocent, but the arrest cost him his job at PBS as the Market Warriors narrator.
Since prosecutors decided to offer him a diversion course instead of prosecuting him, Willard has made light of the entire situation.
He first returned to Twitter, joking that the movie he saw was “much more PG. & my review, lousy film, but theater would make a terrific racquetball court.”
“It’s the last time I’m gonna listen to my wife when she says, ‘Why don’t you go out and see a movie?’” Willard joked with Jimmy Fallon as he tried to explain how he ended up at the theater.
“I see this one [theater]...It had such an exotic look to it. I thought maybe there’s hula dancers in there. Maybe there’s Mai Tais!”
He added, “It’s very embarrassing...It’s embarrassing as hell! But let me say this: nothing happened. I did nothing wrong, everything’s being sorted out as we speak. I have great respect for the authorities. I mean, when we need a policeman, God bless 'em, they’re there. But, if you’re in the wrong place at the wrong time, everything seems suspicious.”
He summarized the whole experience as “an interesting theater, boring movie, and a great place to take a nap.”
