Cable channel Lifetime has released a trailer for its latest made-for-TV movie, a remake of the 1989 film Steel Magnolias. The new film is headlined by an all-black cast with Queen Latifah.
The film also stars Jill Scott, Phylicia Rashad, Alfre Woodard and Condola Rashad. They fill the roles made famous by Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Olympia Dukakis, Shirley MacLaine and Julia Roberts. Dialogue for the new film includes several lines from the original, which earned Roberts an Oscar nomination for Supporting Actress, and Robert Harling’s original 1987 play.
Steel Magnolias centers on a group of women who meet at a beauty parlor and their friendship helps them through the highs and lows of their lives.
“It’s a classic story with classic characters,” Woodard told The New York Post on Monday. “It’s not like we’re turning it into Big Momma’s House!”
Producer Craig Zadan adds that the new film will include scenes that are not in the original. It also includes updated pop culture references, including Facebook and Beyonce shout-outs.
Steel Magnolias is set to air later this year. You can see the two-minute trailer below:
