The first on-set photo of Oscar-nominated actress Naomi Watts in full make-up as Princess Diana for Caught in Flight surfaced earlier this week, showing how much Watts looks like the late princess. The film has now received a new, simpler title.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film is now being called simply Diana. The film, which is being directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel, had been sold to potential distributors at the Cannes Film Festival as Caught in Flight.
Tim Haslam’s Embankment Films picked up worldwide sales for the film, although it has yet to find a U.S. distributor. It is being produced by U.K. company Ecosse Films and will take nine weeks to shoot. The crew is using locations in Croatia, Mozambique, and London. The script was written by Stephen Jeffreys.
Encosse also released an official photo for the film on Wednesday.
In a previous press release, Watts, who last starred in J. Edgar, said of playing Diana, “It is such an honor to be able to play this iconic role — Princess Diana was loved across the world and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on screen.”
The film centers on Diana’s relationship with Dr. Hasnat Kahn before her tragic death in Paris in 1997. Kahn is being played by Lost actor Naveen Andrews. Douglas Hodge and Juliet Stevenson also star in the film.
The first image of Watts as Diana surfaced on Monday, showing her smiling to the camera.
