‘Pretty Little Liars’ Recap: 'Crazy'

By May Chan,
The new girl reminds the Liars of Ali.

With Detective Wilden suspicious of Hanna playing a part in digging up Ali’s grave, Hanna becomes paranoid especially after Wilden shows up at her home and requests Hanna to give a blood sample that could link her to the anklet that was turned in. Hanna thinks that “A” wants Garrett out of jail, so Hanna can take his place.

At the coffee shop, Spencer, Emily, and Aria recognize a voice that sounds exactly like Ali’s. While CeCe Drake is no Ali, she was friends with her, and she has Ali’s demeanor down to a tee.

What’s creepier is that CeCe knows stuff about the Liars, and the Liars have never even heard Ali mention her. CeCe also reveals that she once dated Ali’s brother, Jason.

Meanwhile, Aria’s mother, Ella, lets her daughter know that she has a date from her profile on the dating website. But when Ella meets up with her date at the coffee place, it turns out to be Ted, the pastor, who was smitten with Ashley, Hanna’s mom.

However, when the ice cream date with Ted seems a bit vanilla, Ella ends up on a second date with Zack, the man who owns the coffee shop.

When Aria and Hanna go back to Hanna’s place, they find a Ouija board with a circle around the letter, “A.” As Hanna picks up the planchette, it pricks her finger. A note on it reads, “See how easy it was for me to get your blood?”

Hanna recognizes the board from when she and Mona were playing it one night. When Hanna and Mona wanted to know if Ali was coming back, the board answered that she was still alive. Hanna saw Ali momentarily outside her house, but she wasn’t sure it was all in her head or if it was someone sent to spook Hanna.

Aria points out to Hanna that Mona was probably already “A” then, and that she was probably just messing with Hanna.

Although Spencer and Toby are having trust issues, Spencer seems to be putting Jason as a priority. Spencer asks Jason if he knows that CeCe is back in town. Jason confirms his “intense” relationship with CeCe.

Emily and Nate head to where CeCe works to pick out a gift for Jenna. Nate wants to give Jenna a gift on their date, but CeCe can see that Emily isn’t exactly keen on Nate dating Jenna.

When Nate calls Emily for advice on what he has selected so far, both Nate and Emily agree that Maya wore a similar pair of earrings at the store. Nate also tells Emily that if she wasn't available he wouldn't be going on a date with Jenna.

At the asylum, Aria visits Mona there, despite Hanna thinking that Mona isn’t allowed visitors. Aria and Mona make nice because it is a supervised visit, but the moment the nurse turns her back, Aria grills Mona on who could be torturing Hanna.

Outside the mental institute, Hanna waits for Aria to return and decides that she needs to talk to Mona herself. Aria does not let Hanna go alone. With Aria there, Hanna is hesitant about Aria finding out about why Ali’s dad has held a grudge against her to this day.

Nonetheless, Hanna finally confesses that she told Ali’s mother that she believed that Ali was alive, but then, three days later, Ali’s body was found. Ali’s father blamed Hanna for giving them hope given the reality of the situation.

After Hanna’s reveal, Aria and Hanna discover that Mona has gone missing, but not before long, they find her at the children’s ward playing with some creepy dolls and uttering “nonsense.”

While driving, Spencer witnesses a drunk Jason driving past her and hitting a parked car. Spencer is quick to cover for Jason, by jumping in his driver’s seat and driving off. She leaves her own car at the scene.

Spencer rushes to Toby and tells Toby’s what she had to do. This prompts Toby to lie to Detective Wilden when he questions Spencer.

Hanna and Aria have a sleepover at Aria’s house because Hanna is afraid that “A” has access to her house, but as Hanna is trying to sleep, she realizes that Mona wasn’t just talking gibberish. Mona was talking in code.

When Hanna and Aria meet up with Spencer and Emily, they decipher the code, but it has the Liars wondering if they’re not safe (Duh) or is Mona the one not safe.

The last scene shows the hooded figure going into the children’s ward to disfigure a doll’s head. Inside the stuffing of the doll lies a cell phone recording Aria and Hanna’s conversation with Mona.

Thoughts to ponder until next episode:
- At this point, do you think that Spencer is helping Jason too much? How much is too much? How about Toby covering for Spencer, despite them not seeing eye to eye?
- By giving out that message, is Mona helping the Liars or is she setting them up for a trap?
- What could be on Maya’s website that may help the Liars?
- I like what CeCe Drake brings to the story. How do you think CeCe fits into the story line?

During the summer, Pretty Little Liars airs every Tuesday at 8 p.m. on ABC Family.
