Lionsgate has added another veteran actress to the cast of The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire. The studio announced on Tuesday that Amanda Plummer has joined the film.
Plummer will star as the veteran District 3 tribute Wiress, the studio revealed. The character is a critical ally for hero Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) in Suzanne Collins’ book and earns the nickname “Nuts.” Wiress takes part in the Quarter Quell, which features past winners of the Hunger Games competing against each other.
As The Huffington Post notes, the casting news comes as a bit of a surprise, since there were no rumors connecting Plummer to the film before Lionsgate’s announcement today.
Plummer’s casting follows Lionsgate’s announcement that Philip Seymour Hoffman will play Plutarch Heavensbee. It has also been reported that Jenna Malone has joined the cast to play Johanna Mason. Lionsgate has yet to confirm Malone’s casting and has not announced an actor for the role of Finnick Odair.
Catching Fire is set for release on Nov. 22, 2013 and will be directed by Francis Lawrence. Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks and Lenny Kravitz will be starring in the film.
Plummer is the daughter of Oscar-winner Christopher Plummer and is best known for films like Pulp Fiction, So I Married An Axe Murderer and The Fisher King. She has several films currently in the works, including Abigail Harm.
