Ryan Seacrest took a break from gushing about his new gig at NBC as a reporter for Today during the London Olympics to talk about his other job, American Idol. On Today Thursday morning, Seacrest talked about his first phone call with Mariah Carey since she officially joined as the newest Idol judge.
“I actually called her last night and I said, 'So welcome to the family,'” he told Matt Lauer. “I said, 'What are you going to be like on the show? She said, 'You know how I am: I'm very honest. I say what I'm thinking.' I said, 'Great. You'll fit right in.'”
Seacrest also admitted that it is “sad” to see Jennifer Lopez leave the show. Earlier this month, Lopez confirmed to Seacrest that she will be leaving the show to focus on her other interests.
Idol still needs to find a replacement for Steven Tyler, who announced his departure the day before Lopez. Seacrest acknowledged the rumors of country star Brad Paisley joining the show, but wouldn’t say anything definitive.
“I've heard rumors of Brad Paisley, I've heard rumors of Pink, I've heard rumors about all kinds of people,” Seacrest said. “And the way that it works is we read about the rumors and about an hour before it's confirmed I get a call saying, 'Guess who's on the show.'”
After days of speculation, Carey took to Twitter Monday to confirm that she is joining Idol.
It's gonna be so much fun working on @AmericanIdol. As a singer-songwriter, I'm excited to help find and nurture new talent. LYM! --MC
