TheCelebrityCafe.com's executive editor, Dominick Miserandino, was named the Society of Professional Journalists's volunteer of the month for July. The award recognizes people who give their time and effort to improve the society's local chapters.
Miserandino is the president of SPJ's Press Club of Long Island.
SPJ President John Ensslin praised Miserandino's skills in pulling off the society's Region 1 spring conference.
"Dominick's knack for creative organizational skills was evident throughout the conference, which featured perks ranging from free chocolate to discounted bus trips so that members throughout the region could afford to attend," said Ensslin.
Miserandino said he's honored by the recognition.
"I really appreciate it," he said. "We've had a very busy year - and a successful one so far - but none of it would have been possible without a great team of board members and volunteers."
Miserandino's other accomplishments for the year include:
- He organized and hosted a holiday party at his home as a way to get to know his board, brainstorm and plan for the year ahead
- He also got Jerry Springer to do a program and donate $1,000 because he wanted to support journalism
- Under Miserandino's leadership, the chapter increased attendance at its holiday party and garnered more entries to its journalism contest by going online.
Miserandino founded TheCelebrityCafe.com in 1995. It is currently a top-rated entertainment news site and has more than 4 million readers per month.
