Tom Cruise’s longtime lawyer, Bert Fields, is waging war with tabloids who have been having a field day with his client’s divorce from Katie Holmes and Cruise’s relationship with 6-year-old daughter Suri.
According to The Los Angeles Times, Fields is taking specific aims at reports that claim that the Mission: Impossible star has “abandoned” Suri. He calls these reports “grotesquely false claims.”
Fields pointed directly at the photos from the past couple of days that show Cruise enjoying time with Suri in New York and notes that his production schedule kept him from seeing her right away. “That, as anyone knows who saw their photos together yesterday and today, is a disgusting, vicious lie,” Fields’ statement read. “Until this week, Tom was shooting a film on location [in Iceland], but he spoke to Suri every day. He’s with Suri right now; and he was with her the day before [the magazine] trumpeted their cruelly false accusation. Tom dearly loves Suri, and the last thing he would ever do is abandon her.”
TMZ notes that Fields was particularly angered by a report in Life & Style.
Last week, Fields threatened to sue the National Enquirer for publishing a story that claimed that Cruise forced Holmes and Suri to live in a “House of Horrors.” He called those claims “disgraceful and lurid” and that it would cost Cruise “hundreds of millions of dollars of professional and personal damages, for which we intend to hold American Media, and everyone who participated in the perpetuation of this scurrilous attack, jointly and severally liable.”
On Wednesday, Cruise and Suri enjoyed a nice day in New York that included a trip on a helicopter.
