ABC Family renews ‘Switched at Birth,’ ‘Melissa & Joey’ and ‘Baby Daddy,’ extends ‘Bunheads’

By Daniel S Levine,

Fans of ABC Family’s scripted programming will be happy to know that the cable network has announced that four of its shows will be getting additional episodes.

Switched At Birth has earned a second season. According to Variety, the show will finish its first season with new episodes starting on Sept. 3. Its second season will start in winter 2012-2013. The series stars Katie Leclerc, Vanessa Marano, Lea Thompson and Constance Marie.

Comedies Melissa & Joey and Baby Daddy also earned third and second seasons, respectively, reports Deadline. Both shows have done exceedingly well in the ratings, with Baby Daddy receiving the best debut for an ABC Family Comedy. Both shows also have the top average rating for a cable show in the 18-34 and 18-49 demographics.

Bunheads is getting a back-order pickup, meaning that new episodes will be back this winter. The Sutton Foster-starring show is No. 2 among female cable viewers 18-34 and is produced by Gilmore Girls’ Amy Sherman-Palladino.

Beverly Hills Nannies will also get a reunion special that will air on Sept. 4, ABC Family said.

The network did not say anything about Jane By Design’s future, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

“Two years ago we embarked on a bold strategy to grow the breadth and scope of original programming and create a Wednesday night summer comedy destination,” said Michael Riley, president of ABC Family in a statement. “The new series have resonated with our viewers, and the combination of drama, comedy and reality brings great depth to our lineup. Our stable of strong series continues to grow, and I’m thrilled with the strength of our schedule.”

UPDATE: TV Line later confirmed that Jane By Design has been cancelled.
