For many of us, the first time we took notice of Jennifer Jason Leigh was in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, in which her character lost her virginity, got knocked up, and had an abortion. Well, it’s déjà vu all over again, because her character, Jill, is knocked up! The dad is likely Andy, though it could be Doug from their one at-bat.
But change is all around and Nancy seeks legitimate work. Her first interview at an executive search firm ends badly when her interviewer tells her a quick Internet search revealed her checkered (though not the illegal parts of) her recent past. She then seeks out work from a soccer dad who works in pharmaceuticals, who is grateful when she babysits his annoying kid, and gives her a job. If any of you saw last week’s episode of Louie, you’ll remember that no babysitting deed goes unpunished.
Silas seeks out RJ, and a misguided attempt to reclaim his stolen green plants ends up with him being hired to do a striptease at a woman’s birthday party (this scene gets short shrift, likely because Hunter Parrish’s dance moves are unintentionally funny). Meanwhile, Shane ends up writing papers for his cop school classmates, and gets called out by the teacher (Bill Faggerbakke of Coach and How I Met Your Mother). Shane works out a deal.
Doug and Andy bemoan potential fatherhood, and introduce issues previously explored to very shallow ends – Doug’s feelings of failure as father of a gay son, Andy’s resentment of a largely absentee dad. Andy decides, finally, that he wants to be a dad. He vows to be financially solvent to somehow care for this new bun. At the same time, Nancy learns RJ stole Silas’ pot and brings him in to work with her at her new drug company. And lo and behold, what is this company’s new design? A marijuana pill! Talk about just stepping in it.
