Ellen DeGeneres comedy picked up by NBC

By Daniel S Levine,
DeGeneres will produce the project, written by Lauren Pomerantz

NBC has picked up an untitled single-camera comedy that will be produced by Ellen DeGeneres and Lauren Pomerantz, a producer on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

The project will be written and executively produced by Pomerantz, who is also the senior writer for Ellen. DeGeneres’ A Very Good Production shingle will produce the series with Warner Bros. Television, notes The Hollywood Reporter.

In the series, a successful single woman worries about being alone for the rest of her life when she sees “single woman” listed next to her name on the paperwork for the house she’s about to buy. Her friends, family and a therapist try to convince her otherwise.

According to Deadline, NBC previously bought another DeGeneres-produced comedy, The Smart One, which is now over at ABC.

A Very Good Production also has a project in development with Fox.

NBC has been busy picking up comedies lately, including Michael J. Fox’s series. For that series, NBC has already committed to producing 22 episodes without a pilot being produced.

As for DeGeneres, her daytime talk show has seen its best ratings since it started in 2003. This week’s premiere episode drew a 3.0 overall rating and a 2.2 rating among women 25 to 54.
